A detail survey is done to locate features (details) on a piece of land. It is generally used to help with the design of new buildings or infrastructure, and includes both natural features and man-made structures. Natural features refers to the ground (and ground height such as spot heights and contours), vegetation (trees, plants and plant cover), exposed rocks and water bodies etc. Man made structures includes things built above the ground – roads, buildings, walls, utility infrastructure etc.

Set-out Survey: A set-out survey is the process used to transfer building, engineering, or architectural digital designs and mark them out onto existing land or structures.

These surveys mainly serve two key purposes – to confirm construction is done within legal boundaries and to ensure construction can be performed to the exacting standards of the initial design.

Set-out surveys can include small jobs like an extension to a dwelling, or large jobs like roads, tunnels, bridges, and high rises.
